There are thousands of enzymes that have been identified and researchers know there are thousands more, they don't know how many more, however. There are no essential or non-essential enzymes. All enzymes are important in ensuring proper metabolism within the body. However, depending on a particular health condition, some enzymes may be more in demand than others.
Whenever you see a reference to a biochemical element which ends with the letters ase you can generally know that it is some type of enzyme. Most of these are "metabolic" enzymes which are found in the body, produced by the body, and used to run or regulate cellular function.
The enzymes we are dealing with are digestive enzymes — those involved only in the digestion of food. In most simplistic form, there are three main types we deal with most often: amylase, lipase, and protease. There are many sub-types of enzymes within each of these main types. The purpose of each of these types are outlined and described in detail in the section The Digestive Enzyme Tour.
