  • F.A.Q: Digestive Enzyme Questions

General questions relating to the application and use of supplemental digestive enzymes

    12. How does one compare enzyme products when some manufacturers specify amounts in Milligrams, others use Units of Activity, such as HUT, DU, LU & CU? Is there a conversion factor that one can use? - Top

The only way to correctly measure enzymes is by their activity. Milligrams have no meaning and there is no conversion factor. Milligrams represent either WEIGHT or VOLUME of a substance. You can have a lot of milligrams, but that doesn't tell you the STRENGTH or POTENCY of that substance. The only way to truly evaluate enzymes is by UNITS OF ACTIVITY.

One other thing to consider when selecting digestive enzymes. Make sure they are pH balanced to ensure they can survive the gastric environment thus do you some good. Many lesser quality (thus lower priced) enzymes claim a high activity value but this activity does no good because the enzymes are not stable over a wide pH range.

When purchasing enzymes, be sure you get enough ACTIVITY to make a difference and make sure they are pH balanced. If not, you are just wasting your money. If you are looking at Enzyme Essentials, you will find that they are quite powerful. We also design our formulations to include a blend of enzymes which provide the wide pH range you need for them to be effective.
