High liver enzyme activity in the serum or plasma is usually an indication of liver necrosis and/or inflammation. The liver enzymes should not be found in high concentrations in the serum or plasma unless if the liver is damaged and the enzymes within the hepatocytes (liver cells) leak out into the circulation. The liver constitutes the major "hub" of all nutrients and materials absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Unless there are genetic conditions of liver diseases, most liver necrosis conditions are the result of poor diet including xenobiotics. In order to get more specific than this, it is necessary to have further information about which specific liver enzymes are high. - Updated: February 27, 2000
