Conditions that can often be helped by the use of digestive enzymes

    3. Sugar Intolerances - Top

There are two types of sugar categories, although they are both in the carbohydrate family:
    1) Monosaccharides – glucose, galactose, fructose
    2) Disaccharides – sucrose, lactose, maltose

Before the body can use complex carbohydrates, they must be broken down to simple monosaccharide sugars. The enzyme Amylase accomplishes this. The monosaccharides can then be absorbed by the intestinal wall and thrown into the bloodstream for distribution throughout the body. Glucose is either used immediately by some of the cells (brain cells and RBCs), or it is conveyed to the liver, muscles and fat cells where it is converted into glycogen. The liver must first convert the galactose and fructose to glucose before it can go the same route. Glycogen is converted to fat so it may be burned as fuel. The pancreas secretes insulin to help control the sugar levels in the blood. Insulin restores the glucose level by stimulating the up-take of un-needed carbohydrate calories by the liver, muscles and fat for storage as glycogen and fat.

Diabetes, in simple terminology, is a disorder where the body produces insufficient amounts of insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels or when cells don’t respond appropriately to insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin dependent diabetes) produce little or no insulin at all and must receive daily injections. It has been determined that approximately 6% of the U.S. population has some form of diabetes, and only about 10% are Type 1. It usually develops before the age of 30. Scientists believe that something, whether viral or nutritional, causes the immune system to destroy the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. In Type II diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent diabetes), the pancreas continues to produce insulin, sometimes even at a higher rate than normal. The body develops resistance to its effects, resulting in a relative insulin deficiency. Type II usually occurs after age 30, and becomes progressively more common with age. Obesity is a risk factor for Type II; 80 – 90% of people with Type II are obese. Over time, elevated blood sugar levels damage blood vessels, nerves, and other internal structures. Complex sugar-based substances build up in the walls of the small blood vessels, causing them to thicken and leak. Poorly controlled blood sugar levels also cause the blood levels of fatty substances to rise, resulting in accelerated atherosclerosis (build up of plaque in the blood vessels. The treatment of diabetes requires attention to weight control, exercise, and DIET!!!

Hyperglycemia is an abnormally high level of glucose in the blood and Hypoglycemia is an abnormally low level of glucose in the blood.

Many times you hear people describe themselves as borderline diabetics. Although this terminology is over-used, it may be time to consider this a warning and shape up and be aware of your diet, exercise regularly, and control your weight.

Nutritionally, it is time to recognize the importance of a diet that is correct for your particular body type and lifestyle. Also, don't overlook the importance of a frequent and consistent exercise regimen.

Enzymes can be a great deal of help in balancing the body and taking any added burden off the pancreas and the digestive tract. The role of supplementary digestive enzymes is to help endogenous digestive enzymes to make available nutrients that are in the food ingested. In doing so, supplemental enzymes not only spare the body from over-working making additional digestive enzymes, but they help save the amino acid pool for other valuable nutrients needed by the cells. At the same time, they conserve energy for the other metabolic reactions. The importance of proteolytic enzymes cannot be overlooked.
